Puerto Vallarta will open to tourists on June 1st, 2020.*
As two of the states in Mexico that were least affected by the Coronavirus and COVID-19, Jalisco (Puerto Vallarta) and Nayarit (Nuevo Vallarta, Riviera Nayarit) have been given the green light by the Mexican health authorities to start the reopening process on May 18, 2020.
It will be a phased reopening, with the last two weeks of May being called "Phase 0" which means:
The airport remains open and receiving daily flights as it has been previously.
Hotels can reopen but must keep the common areas closed (pools, spas, etc).
Restaurants and cafes can operate to 50% capacity.
Bars and clubs remain closed, along with movie theaters, gyms and spas.
Beaches and rivers remain closed, along with other public gathering places.
Shops and businesses that don't create crowds can reopen but shopping malls remain closed.
Public transportation running at 100%
During this stage, hotels, restaurants, tours and attractions will be preparing to reopen to tourists on June 1st or shortly thereafter by implementing strict sanitary and health protocols in order to provide guests with as safe and secure of an environment as possible.
*Our Advice: Technically touristic arrivals are allowed even on May 18th, but it will take a couple weeks for everything to get fully opened up and protocols in place, so we recommend to plan your visit for June when the beaches, hotels and attractions will be open for your enjoyment.

Carnival Panorama's weekly visits have been postponed until September 5th.
Oceania Insignia is still scheduled to visit on July 8th.
All other cruises are still on schedule to resume on schedule in September as normal.
Super Saver Tip - Cruise Lines |
Interested in taking a cruise ship when it's safe to travel again? You can plan your trip ahead of time and take advantage of these amazing deals the following companies are launching.
Q: Is there Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Puerto Vallarta?
A: No place in the world is completely free of COVID-19. However, infection rates are low compared to most areas in the US. There are 250,000 people living in Puerto Vallarta, from which we have 37 active cases, 121 recovered and 15 deaths.
Q: Is it safe to visit Puerto Vallarta right now with the Coronavirus?
A: Our city is taking your health seriously and all businesses must get certified by the health authorities and implement strict health protocols to operate. At this time, Puerto Vallarta has low rates compared to most places in US and we inteed to keep it like that.
Q: Will I need to wear a mask while I'm in Puerto Vallarta? Or on the airplane?
A: Masks will not be required in Puerto Vallarta due to enforcement of social distancing guidelines and strict sanitizing protocols. However, masks and gloves will be worn by some workers including people handling food, for example, in order to keep you as safe and healthy as possible.
You may be asked to wear a mask on the airplane due to individual airline regulations, but you won't be asked to wear one while you are in Puerto Vallarta. You will want to buy a mask to bring with you in case of airports or other special circumstances though.
Q: Will there be hand sanitizer available?
A: Yes, all businesses are required to provide hand sanitizer and you will have it in your hotel room. However, we still recommend you bring your own to use along the way, which you can buy online from shops like Sustainable Travel Store, ZSkin or Germproof.
Q: Are there other things I should think to bring with me?
A: Other than the usual things like a hat, sunglasses, swimwear, biodegradable sunscreen or after-sun lotion, you may want to consider boosting your immune system with a product like Airborne or Germ-Proof or with Vitamins, but as long as you bring hand sanitizer you should have all the precautions you need.
If you will be doing water activities we always recommend to bring a rash guard or wet-shirt to protect you from the sun and protect the environment, and you may wish to bring your own snorkeling gear, though it will be provided for you fully sanitized on our tours if you don't.
Q: Is Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR) Open?
A: Yes. It is open to international and domestic flights. However non-essential businesses remain closed through May so we recommend to wait until June for your vacation plans.
Q: I'm arriving in May. Are your airport transfers running?
A: Yes. However you will need to book them at least 24 hours in advance so that we can prepare them for your arrival. We will resume normal services on June 1st or shortly thereafter, so you can still book your service for that time.
Q: Does the US have travel restrictions for international travel?
A: Not to Mexico. Airlines have been flying between the US and Mexico continuously. However, due to low demand, many routes have been temporarily dropped by the airlines.
There is a restriction on land border crossings through June 22nd but this does not affect air travel.
Q: Are hotels in Puerto Vallarta and Nuevo Vallarta open right now?
A: Yes, some of them. Hotels can reopen but must keep the common areas closed (pools, spas, etc). It is after June, when most hotels will reopen for tourists with full services.
Q: Will all the facilities at my hotel be available like normal? Will the bars and restaurants and spa be open?
A: Currently, hotels are preparing to reopen with all the health protocols put into place. However, common areas will remain closed and are expected to start operating as you would want during June.
Q: Won't it be crowded at my hotel? I'm worried about social distancing.
A: No. Hotels will be opening only to partial capacity in order to preserve social distancing, and by nature most hotels in Puerto Vallarta are relatively small and most of the area is quite spread out.
Q: Are you open?
A: Yes. We are working remotely and ready to serve you 7 days a week Monday to Friday from 7:00 Am to 4:00 PM (CDT) and Saturday to Sunday from 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM (CDT) with any questions you have. We are accepting bookings for all our activities for travel dates in June and onward.
Q: Will all your tours and activities be running when I arrive?
A: Yes. We expect all tours and activities to resume June 1st or shortly thereafter, including fishing and water activities. However due to reduced volume, we strongly recommend to book well in advance of your tour date because if there are already bookings, then we can know there will be enough people to run that tour.
If everyone waits until the last minute, then it may be difficult for the tour operators to run some tours just because they didn't prepare staff and equipment since they thought they didn't have bookings that day.
Some tours that normally operate on a shared basis may be offered only on a private basis if demand isn't there, but most likely everything will be available, we just ask that you be flexible and patient in consideration of the situation.
Q: Will I be able to go snorkeling or go on a boat tour while I'm in Puerto Vallarta?
A: Yes. All tours will be running as normal starting in June, just with less people on the tours than in other times, which is actually pretty nice
Q: Are golf courses in Puerto Vallarta open?
A: They will be open when you arrive in June.
Q: Can I cancel and get a refund if I can't visit due to Coronavirus?
A: Yes. We hope you will be able to change your date, in which case this is always free of charge. If not, then yes if COVID-19 disrupts your vacation plans you can cancel and receive a refund.
Q: Will I be able to bring a group or plan an event in Puerto Vallarta this summer?
A: Yes. Puerto Vallarta has special protocols in place to be able to accommodate groups and events such as weddings, including group tours and activities. Our groups team is here 7 days a week to advise you and help you set up your event. Even if you're not visiting this summer, you can still start planning to have that dream destination event in Puerto Vallarta that you've been wishing for.
Q: Are restaurants and bars open in Puerto Vallarta?
A: When you arrive in June, all the restaurants, bars, and shops will be open for your enjoyment, in full compliance with the new safety and hygiene protocols including social distancing.
